Projection Mapping for a Transforming Stage

For the world premiere of Chicago 1930, WE ARE VIDEO created the video design for the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. The production, directed and choreographed by Karl A. Schreiner, explored the world of Prohibition-era Chicago through dance, music, and digital scenography.

To support the story, set designer Rifail Ajdarpasic recreated the streets of Chicago as a detailed three-dimensional environment. 3D projection mapping transformed the stage throughout the performance. As a result, scenes changed instantly without physical set modifications.

Digital Scenography and Visual Storytelling

The projections became an integral part of the performance. Streets, interiors, and urban landscapes appeared directly on the stage. At the same time, lighting, choreography, and digital content worked together to create one coherent visual experience.

Instead of acting as a simple backdrop, the projections guided the audience through the story. They created atmosphere, supported dramatic transitions, and expanded the physical stage into a cinematic environment.

Theatre Meets Projection Mapping

Critics praised the production for its atmospheric visuals and the successful integration of digital media into the performance. The project demonstrated how projection mapping, video design, and digital scenography can transform a theatre production while preserving the immediacy of live performance.
