Ludwig² – The King is back: an acoustic-visual masterpiece from the Neuschwanstein Festival Theatre goes to Shanghai.

In December 2024, THE award-winning musical from the Neuschwanstein Festival Theatre Ludwig² – The King is Back celebrated its China debut at the Shanghai Culture Square and wowed the audience with an impressive production. The German-language concert version combined opulent stage sets, classical vocal interludes and a 65-piece orchestra that perfectly emphasised the dramatic music.

WE ARE VIDEO and video designer Thomas Mahneke (Head of Video Technology Concert and Theatre St. Gallen) were responsible for the video design, integrating impressive projections with iconic motifs from Munich, Neuschwanstein and Bavaria. Particularly noteworthy is the WE ARE VIDEO Ai animation DREAMSTREAM, which shows King Ludwig II in a hallucinatory vision – dreaming of Neuschwanstein Castle even before it was built.

WE ARE VIDEO founder Raphael Kurig, head of the video department at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, accompanied the realisation on site. The experienced video and lighting artist has been combining art and technology since 2010 and creates video designs for operas and musicals.

Thanks to innovative video technology and creative realisation, WE ARE VIDEO and Thomas Mahneke brought the legend of King Ludwig II to life visually and created an unforgettable experience for the Chinese audience.
