The painted castle
RUNKELSTEIN CASTLE / IT-BOLZANO
Runkelstein Castle, the so-called “the painted castle”, towers high above Bolzano. It is one of the most important sites of secular wall painting in the Alpine region. The murals depict scenes from courtly life, including hunting parties, tournaments and literary motifs such as the love story of Tristan and Isolde.
The castle has now been given a new, contemporary permanent exhibition, marking the start of a new museum era.
WE ARE VIDEO was commissioned to animate the famous frescoes and retell them on film. For this project, we once again had the pleasure of working with Gruppe Gut ( Design Agency located in Bolzano) – the first project in this constellation was the special exhibition: ‘Oskar Schindler – bon vivant and lifesaver’ at the Sudeten German Museum in Munich.
Almost six months of work went into the moving images of the “painted castle” (Bilderburg): the frescoes were digitised, animated down to the last detail and set to sound – with respect for the original and a desire for new perspectives.
This innovative presentation offers new perspectives on the historical works of art and brings history to life.
The opening of the new main exhibition took place on 11 April 2025.
This unique experience for art and history enthusiasts can now also be viewed in daily guided tours in German and Italian. The tours last around 50 minutes and offer in-depth insights into the history and art of the castle.
