Deck the walls

ERNST-ABBE-HOCHHAUS / JENA

“DECK THE WALLS” is an exclusive, interactive Christmas video projection – a gift flipper on a high-rise wall.

Together with JENOPTIK, we invited people to play the interactive art installation “DECK THE WALLS” on the Ernst-Abbe skyscraper in Jena from December 2023 to January 2024. Visitors were invited to rethink traditional Christmas decorations while using their own smartphone, they could flip digital presents onto the JENOPTIK facade at: jenoptik.wearevideo.de/.

If you hit the upper open space online, the gifts rolled down the real facade of the Jenoptik building.

The interactive installation offers fun for the whole family – on a Christmas stroll or after a shopping trip. “Snapping” or better said the online game can (still) be played from the couch or depending on where you are. This makes the installation a real long-lasting pleasure to play far beyond the event period.

This interactive video installation combines traditional Christmas market elements with modern technology, creating a playful dimension and a unique link between nostalgia and innovation. Moreover, it is more than just a video installation, it is a participatory experience that combines the boundaries between smartphone and reality and allows guests to actively participate in the artistic process.

At the turn of the year, the video installation was changed again so that guests could throw horseshoes and lucky clovers instead of presents and as a funny note by the side the snowballs, remained and symbolized the “Grinch”.

Jenoptik and WE ARE VIDEO not only offer a visual sensation here, but also an innovative example of the combination of art, technology and interaction.
