Emergence in Nature – The Hidden Order of Life

DEUTSCHES MUSEUM / MUNICH

How does order emerge from chaos?
How does nature form its structures – from snowflakes and leaves to galaxies? (Speaking of galaxies, we previously collaborated with Nicole Pobst on the Cosmic Hive exhibition).
The new immersive exhibition ‘Emergence in Nature’ by WE ARE VIDEO and Nicole Popst invites visitors to experience these questions in a fascinating interplay of art, science and technology.

A poetic journey through the mathematics of nature

At the heart of the experience is a (planned) 40-minute fulldome projection that takes visitors on a visual journey through the fundamental principles of nature, from atoms and crystals to DNA and cell structures, as well as fractal networks and spiral growth forms.
The narrative combines science, art and philosophy in a thoughtful way, exploring how beauty and complexity can emerge from simple rules.

The chapter Fibonacci – The golden code of life

One of Leonardo’s most impressive chapters is devoted to nature’s ‘golden’ blueprint, the so-called Fibonacci sequence and the golden angle.
The projection reveals the geometric magic behind the growth of sunflowers, pine cones and shells.

The camera follows the spirals of life, which are arranged at a perfect angle of 137.5 degrees – an invisible rule that creates efficiency and harmony in nature.

The basic theme of the exhibition is symbolically represented by the ‘golden code’: nature is not a random system, but a mathematical quantity in motion. It consists of a poetic combination of numbers, rhythm and form.

Interactive symbiosis – when the audience becomes part of nature

At the end of the experience, the audience itself becomes part of this growth. Using an individually generated QR code, visitors can use their smartphones to “plant” virtual seeds on the dome.
Each seed grows into a digital flower – each in a different colour, shape and direction. Together, this creates a collective garden that unfolds in real time across the entire dome.

This interactive gesture connects art and nature, humans and algorithms: a symbol of shared growth and creative emergence.

Technology meets poetry

The installation utilises state-of-the-art XR technologies, generative design and real-time engines such as Unreal Engine, Unity and Touchdesigner.
The aesthetics follows the principle of natural elegance – fluid, organic, mathematically precise. Here, technology is not understood as opposed to nature, but as a tool to reveal its inner logic.

Research and development – A prototype for the future

Emergence in Nature is currently in the prototype phase.
The aim of this development stage is to test and optimise the complete workflow for dome projections and rendering processes.
A technical benchmark will be created to evaluate the performance and visual quality of future productions.
In addition, the interactive part will be tested with an audience to investigate how the interfaces – from latency and stability to user experience – can be further improved.
The result is not only an artistic work, but also a technological research project at the interface of media art and XR design.

Part of a series on nature and emergence

Emergence in Nature is part of an ongoing series of immersive XR projects that explore the relationship between nature, science and technology.
Each work illuminates a different aspect of the hidden order of life – from chemical self-organisation to mathematical aesthetics.
The result is a new form of audiovisual knowledge transfer that combines education, art and emotion.

Supported by the Bavarian Film and Television Fund

The project is supported by FFF Bayern as part of its funding for XR and media art projects.
This funding enables the further development of innovative forms of digital storytelling and the creation of new immersive spaces for science and art.

A project of WE ARE VIDEO and Nicole Popst

Emergence in Nature is a collaboration between WE ARE VIDEO – the Munich-based collective led by Raphael Kurig and Christian Gasteiger – and physicist and media artist Nicole Popst.
Together, they create an immersive total work of art that combines art and science and invites the audience to see the world through new eyes – filled with wonder at the beauty of the patterns that surround and connect us.
